Concept of Definition Map
Concept mapping provides a visual illustration the clarifies relationships between concepts and ideas according to Inspiration Software. Concept maps are often represented through the use of boxes, circles, or squares that are linked by words and phrases that explain the connection between the ideas. Providing these connections helps students provide structure and organization of their their thoughts to further understand information and discover new relationships.
Most concept maps represent a hierarchical structure, with the overall, broad concept first with connected sub-topics, more specific concepts, following. According to page 15 of Dr. Mimi Miller and Nancy Veatch in their 2011 book entitled Literacy in Context (LinC): Choosing Instructional Strategies to Teach Reading in Content Areas for Students Grades 5-12, Concept Definition Map is created using three components:

Miller and Veatch's 2011 Guide to:
Creating a Concept Map
1. Choose a term that is central to the curriculum. Place that term in the “Main Concept” box.
2. Define the concept for the students. If the word is defined in the text, guide students to that definition. Have students record the definition in the “What is it?” box.
3. Explain to students the difference between this concept and other similar concepts by discussing and recording its properties in the “What’s it like?” box. (This can include synonyms.)
4. With the class, generate examples. Add words, descriptions, and/or images in the “Example” boxes.
5. Students complete their individual CD Maps as the teacher discusses the content and completes a class CD Map on the board, overhead, or Interwrite board. CD Maps can then be used by students as they continue to encounter this concept throughout the section or to review at the end of the chapter.
2. Define the concept for the students. If the word is defined in the text, guide students to that definition. Have students record the definition in the “What is it?” box.
